November 9, 2011

WHAT:       Debut of OmniVR, the first virtual reality therapy system in Maryland

WHERE:  Asbury Methodist Village, Wilson Health Care Center – Gaithersburg, Md.

BACKGROUND: Move over, treadmills. Therapy goes high tech with the OmniVR , a virtual reality system that tackles physical and cognitive challenges. But like a WiiTM or video gaming system, it offers entertaining options and virtual environments that improve users’ motivation. OmniVR creates accurate, uniform assessments to improve outcomes. A hit with computer-savvy seniors, it will no doubt be even more appealing to the next generation.

• Mobility:  Walk down a sidewalk while avoiding such obstacles as children throwing a ball, cyclists, even banana peels.

• Balance:  Stomp on garden marauders as they pop up a la “Whack-a-Mole,” but avoid the helpful lady bugs.

•  Memory:  Remember multiple items, then bend and grab the correct ones.

Asbury Methodist Village is a CARF-CCAC and EAGLE-accredited continuing care retirement community that is part of Asbury Communities, Inc., which provides management and support services for a system of continuing care retirement communities for older adults.  Asbury Communities is ranked by the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) and Ziegler Capital Markets Group’s AZ 100 as the 15th largest not-for-profit multi-site senior living organization in the country.  Asbury Methodist Village is also a member of LifeSpan Network.
