Located in the heart of Montgomery County, Asbury Methodist Village is a vital part of the surrounding community, partnering with many local organizations to enhance our residents’ experience as well as serve the greater community. In 2011, Asbury Methodist Village engaged leaders from city and county government, academia, local hospitals, community social services, and other organizations that influence the quality of life and overall well-being of the community on a leading edge collaborative project. This coalition will endeavor to create a blueprint for healthy communities, addressing the needs and wants of our aging and increasingly diverse society in this “New Economy” that requires more cooperation and the leveraging of resources. Our community partnerships include:
Asbury Methodist Village has sponsored a series of concerts in Strathmore’s Mansion along with programs such as The Stravinsky Project, an unprecedented, three-day immersion experience featuring five Russian-trained pianists, chorus, orchestra in concerts, immersive education programs, an art exhibition, symposiums and films. The partnership opens the doors for collaborative ventures and provides Asbury residents and associates with discounted tickets to Strathmore events.
Asbury Methodist Village inspired BlackRock to begin a dialogue regarding the future of their Arts for Adults programming in the fall 2010. As a result of this effort, BlackRock, with the help of Asbury residents and staff, conducted a community-wide survey and then held an Arts for Adults Open House in April 2011, which was attended by more than 60 people. The Arts for Life and Learning Workshops continue to evolve and be influenced by what has been learned as a result of the thoughtful dialogue that has ensued since this partnership began.
Asbury is host to this award-winning ensemble community theater open to the community at large; Asbury residents attend performances free of charge. Numerous community organizations utilize the myriad community room spaces on the Asbury Methodist Village campus for meetings, programs, and special events. In May 2011, the City of Gaithersburg broke from tradition and held its annual State of the City event on the Asbury campus.
Residents assemble goody bags for the kids with schools supplies, books, toys, clothing, and more.
Residents of the Wilson Health Care Center prepare 150 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches each week, nearly 8,000 per year, for the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless Men’s Shelter.
Asbury Methodist Village organized and provided space for 30 pharmacy students to display informational poster boards and educate residents and associates on things such as vaccinations, diabetes, heart health, and hypertension. Providing this opportunity for students helps them in the training for their pharmacy degree.
Asbury staff worked with researchers from the University of Maryland to pilot a newly created examination tool. The tool helps to detect potential problems with mobility (walking and upright activities) before they interfere with daily activities.
A workshop held for spiritual leaders, counselors/therapists in the community beyond Asbury Methodist Village, provided the opportunity for counselors/therapists, clergy, seminarians, lay caregivers, and clinical pastoral education students to enhance their understanding and skills related to serving others who are experiencing life-altering transitions.
Asbury Pastoral Care staff provide supervision to students during internships that provide the students with experiential opportunities for pastoral counseling support and care with the Asbury residents.
Graduate students from Georgetown University’s Health Systems Management program and The George Washington University’s Health Services Management and Leadership program gain valuable practical experience through a number of programs and opportunities extended to the students and faculty both at the Asbury campus and in the classroom.
Asbury Methodist Village associates and residents have been instrumental in their efforts to address mental health and suicide prevention both locally and nationally through a number of significant collaborative projects and speaking engagements in partnerships with organizations such as the Center for Mental Health Services- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, National Institute of Mental Health, Suicide Prevention Resource Center, and the American Association of Suicidology.
