Wildlife Preserve

Asbury’s scenic campus is also home to a 17-acre nature preserve.

At Asbury Methodist Village, some of our most impressive residents live here for free. That’s because Asbury’s scenic campus is also home to a 17-acre nature preserve, and the entire 130-acre campus has been certified as a “Wildlife at Work” site by the Wildlife Habitat Council. What began as a group of residents turning part of the campus into a bird sanctuary became a larger initiative, steered by a volunteer campus council of residents and associates. Their dedication to protecting area wildlife has created a safe haven for some of the campus’ most unusual inhabitants – a herd of deer, foxes, nesting birds, waterfowl and endangered honey bees. The whole community has gotten involved in the preservation and beautification of the campus.

• With the help of Boy Scouts, more than 3,800 trees on campus have been mapped and tagged.
• Special-needs students from a local high school helped build bluebird nesting boxes.
• Local gardeners joined residents in creating a dedicated 2.5-acre space with private garden plots, lined with plantings that attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

From a core group of nature lovers who advanced an idea back in 2007, Asbury Methodist Village has built practices that enhance life for all residents, even the four-legged and winged ones.
