A. Asbury Methodist Village offers a vibrant, socially, physically and intellectually engaging lifestyle filled with conveniences. There’s a feeling here of being among extended family. But many residents believe the most important aspect of living at Asbury is having a secure plan for the future no matter how your needs change. With lifetime priority access to a full continuum of health and supportive services, Asbury residents and their family members have peace of mind knowing that they will have access to home health, assisted living, skilled care and memory support services, even if they exhaust their financial resources through no fault of their own.
A. The cost depends partly on the size and style of residence that you choose. All residents pay a one-time entrance fee plus a monthly fee. The cost of each varies based on the type and size of residence that you choose. Additionally, the cost of entrance fee will vary based on the type of residency agreement you choose. At Asbury Methodist Village, you can choose from three different agreements, including a 100 percent refundable plan*. If two people live in the residence, there is no additional entrance fee, but a second-person monthly fee applies. The costs vary widely by neighborhood. Because there are so many choices, we recommend that you meet with a Retirement Counselor to find out which makes the most sense for you. * Carefully read the continuing care agreement for the conditions that must be satisfied before Asbury Methodist Village is required to pay the Entrance Fee Refund.
Yes. At Asbury Methodist Village, you can choose from three different entrance fee plans. Two of these plans will refund all or part of the entrance fee according to the terms and conditions of your residency agreement*. One of these plans offers a 90 percent refund, while the other provides a 100 percent refund. A third option is a non-refundable plan, called the standard plan. The standard fee amortizes over the first 60 months of residency. This means that for the first 60 months you live at Asbury, you could receive at least a partial refund of your entrance fee. After 60 months, however, no refundable portion of the standard entrance fee remains. Refunds are paid within 30 days after Asbury Methodist Village receives an entrance fee from the next person who occupies your residence, and you no longer reside in any accommodation at Asbury Methodist Village. All refundable entrance fees are pursuant to the terms of the Residency Agreement. A. It depends on your financial goals and circumstances. Our retirement counselors are available to assist you in reviewing the three contract options to see which one is the best fit for you. The standard entrance fee is the most affordable way to enjoy the Asbury lifestyle, regardless of which neighborhood you select. While the 100 percent refundable contract* requires a larger upfront payment, it offers the most value over time because all of the funds will be returned to you or your estate pursuant to the terms of the Residency Agreement. The 90 percent refundable program offers more long-term value than the standard contract, but is more affordable than the 100 percent refundable contract. A. The amount of your monthly fee is based on the style of residence you choose and the array of services provided in that neighborhood. For instance, most residents’ monthly fees include a daily meal plan, but residents of Park View, The Villas and The Courtyard Homes pay as they go when they dine at Asbury Methodist Village’s five restaurants. Typically, the monthly fee includes interior and exterior maintenance of the residence, some or all of the utilities, 24-hour emergency call systems, transportation and access to all of the Asbury Methodist Village amenities and common areas. Specific inclusions in the monthly fee are detailed in the Residency Agreement and Disclosure Statement.
A. With more than 50 different floor plans in eight independent living neighborhoods, Asbury Methodist Village offers so many living options that it can accommodate a wide range of people age 60 plus. Before being accepted for residency, you would be asked to show that you have enough income and assets to support your living expenses through your projected lifespan. This calculation is made through a system maintained by an outside actuary. (If you outlive your resources, you would be eligible for Asbury’s Benevolent Care program. See below for details.) Generally, someone with a retirement income who owns a home in the area or has equivalent assets can afford the security and benefits of the Asbury lifestyle. In some cases, people with lower assets are able to live at Asbury if a relative agrees to place a designated sum of money in trust. In these cases, the trust is released and the funds are returned if not needed to cover the resident’s expenses. An Asbury retirement counselor will be happy to help you understand the best options for you.
A. A significant part of Asbury’s not-for-profit mission is to ensure that residents who outlive their resources through no fault of their own are able to continue living at Asbury Methodist Village. These residents are able to apply for and receive support to cover their expenses, regardless of whether they live in residential living or assisted living. The Asbury Foundation actively seeks donations for Benevolent Care, including a special endowment fund, to offset the costs of providing this support.
A. If you ever require services in Kindley Assisted Living or in Wilson Health Care Center, you will always have preference over non-resident applicants for when openings are available. This is an important aspect of life at Asbury. Residents and their family members have peace of mind knowing that should they ever need it, healthcare services are available.
A. Asbury Methodist Village residents who move into Kindley Assisted Living pay lower fees than someone who moves into Kindley from outside the Asbury Methodist Village campus. This savings is one of many good reasons to move to Asbury Methodist Village while you are able to enjoy all of the benefits of the lifestyle.
A. Asbury Methodist Village is a Type C, fee-for-service continuing care retirement community. Because a Type C residency agreement does not offset the future cost of health-care services, the Internal Revenue Service does not recognize any part of the Entrance Fee or residential living monthly fees toward a medical deduction. However, it is possible that fees paid for assisted living or for skilled care services may be eligible for a medical deduction. Please see a tax analyst to learn whether your financial circumstances would allow you to deduct these expenses from your income.
A. We do! Many dogs and cats call Asbury home, and in 2017, we added a fenced, quarter-acre dog park on the campus, thanks to the efforts of the community's resident-run dog club.
A. Asbury Methodist Village is owned and operated by Asbury Atlantic Inc., a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation and the legal entity responsible for providing services to the residents of Asbury Methodist Village. In addition to Asbury Methodist Village, Asbury Atlantic owns and operates two other continuing care retirement communities—Bethany Village in Mechanicsburg, PA, and Springhill in Erie, PA. Asbury Atlantic is owned and operated solely by Asbury Communities, a separate 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation, which also operates two other continuing care retirement communities, the not-for-profit Asbury Foundation Inc. and other entities.
A. Under direction of the Executive Director, a management team is responsible for the day-to-day operations and overall functioning of Asbury Methodist Village. Several governing boards, comprised of volunteer members, provide high-level oversight. The Asbury Methodist Village Board of Governors works directly with the Executive Director and is focused exclusively on Asbury Methodist Village’s programs, quality of care and service, master campus planning, and fundraising activities (in conjunction with the Asbury Foundation). The Board of Governors makes recommendations to the Asbury Atlantic, Inc. Board of Directors, which is legally responsible for control of Asbury Methodist Village. Additionally, the Asbury Atlantic Board has the primary responsibility for approving the budget and maintaining financial health as well as monitoring quality of care and services. The Asbury Communities Inc. Board of Directors is focused on enhancing the strength of the entire organization, ensuring fulfillment of its mission and tax-exempt purpose, and recognizing its full potential for providing services to seniors.
A. Asbury Methodist Village does not have any individual long-term debt. Instead, all of its long-term debt is part of the Maryland Obligated Group, which includes Asbury Methodist Village and Asbury~Solomons Inc. Since the inception of the Maryland Obligated Group, there has never been a time that either community has been unable to pay its share of the debt. Being part of the Maryland Obligated Group enables each community to obtain the capital funds it requires at a lower interest rate than it could if it were to borrow the funds individually. The Maryland Obligated Group is sufficiently financially strong that its debt is rated as investment grade by the Fitch Inc. bond rating service. Only about 4 percent of CCRCs nationally have investment-grade bond funds.
A. Asbury Methodist Village has active and vibrant resident association groups that promote resident interests, facilitate communication, interact with management, and organize events and activities. Each building on campus has a Resident Council, which generally meets monthly or bi-monthly. In addition, there are nine Partnership Advisory Committees (PACs) that focus on various aspects of campus life. The purpose of the PACs is to receive and integrate resident and staff suggestions for improving the quality of life at Asbury Methodist Village. The PACs are organized under the Coordinating Council, Asbury Village (CCAV).
A. Yes. The community is an equal housing opportunity provider and has a diverse resident population that includes and celebrates people of all faiths, races, lifestyles and backgrounds. The community is open to all regardless of religion, race, nationality gender or disability. Asbury residents have access to a variety of spiritual programming on campus, including ecumenical services, Catholic Mass and Shabbat services. Additionally, a number of local denominations and churches – Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, Lutheran and Unitarian Universalists – hold services or meetings on a monthly or bimonthly basis. Asbury’s Pastoral Care staff includes a director from The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) tradition as well as staff pastors in both Kindley Assisted Living and in Wilson Health Care Center.
