If you’re interested in a
computer-related activity at Asbury Methodist Village, there’s a good chance
you’ll find it happening at the Smithey Technology Center. Located in the
Rosborough Cultural Arts and Wellness Center, the Smithey Center is home to
12 computer systems – both PC and Mac-based – that allow Asbury residents to
participate in a variety of classes and programs that define and sharpen
their computer skills.
Made possible by a donation from Asbury Methodist Village residents Dorothy
and Wayne Smithey, the Technology Center is available seven days a week for
use by residents of Asbury Methodist Village, many of whom use the computers
to communicate via email, compose documents or explore the many programs
that are offered. Each computer features a high-speed Internet connection,
and several volunteers schedule regular time at the center to assist users
seeking advice or needing questions answered.
The Smithey Technology Center is managed by members of the Asbury Computer
Club, which welcomes all residents with an interest in computers – whether
beginner, intermediate or expert users. With a membership more than 100
strong, the Computer Club hosts regular meetings, discussion groups and
presentations that assist club members and Asbury computer users in a
variety of ways.
Hands-on classes are held regularly at the Smithey Center by JCA SeniorTech,
a service for the Jewish Council on Aging. Among the many subjects users can
choose from are Introduction to Computers, Word Processing, Email & the Web,
Digital Imaging and Presentation Fundamentals using PowerPoint.
The diverse backgrounds, experience and knowledge of our computer users,
combined with the resources of the Smithey Technology Center, create a
benefit for Asbury Methodist Village residents that supports the
intellectual, vocational and social aspects of our Wellness philosophy!
